COSAL Control and Monitoring

COSAL (Control System of Airfield Lighting) has been developed specifically for use at airports of every category. A maximum of built-in dependability assures operation at all times under all visible weather conditions.

COSAL Control and Monitoring is modular in structure:

Control and Monitoring System AGL-ACMS

The computer-based control and monitoring system for airport lighting from LUCEBIT (AGL-ACMS: Airfield Ground Lighting Advanced Control and Monitoring System) belongs to the COSAL family and is an ultra-flexible, reliable, open and scalable system that has been developed in order to meet the increasingly stringent requirements applying at military and civil airports.

The clear hardware structure, along with a sophisticated software structure, is simple to operate and facilitates installation maintenance and service during the system's whole lifecycle. Centralized, partially distributed, or totally distributed system layouts are possible. Based on the required level of availability a simple, a partially redundant, or a fully redundant system architecture can be selected.

Universal Control Server UCS 1000

The UCS 1000 universal control server, developed specifically for this system, is an integrated industrial PC that is used both as a control computer at small and medium-sized airfields and also as an interface for controlling lighting components.

The UCS possesses a CAN bus and two RS232 interfaces. Lighting components that do not possess a field bus can be controlled directly using local inputs and outputs. Three Ethernet connections provide an option for redundant interfacing with the higher-order instrumentation and control system, and function as a router for subordinate systems. Four USB 2.0 connections enable a touch system, a keyboard, a mouse and other specialized devices to be integrated.

CAS Lamp Failure Measuring Unit

CAS, a constituent part of the COSAL system, is a scalable measuring system for acquiring, displaying, and forwarding lamp failure figures and current actual values in phase-controlled series circuits of the airport lighting system.

CAS is installed in a 19” drawer, which at the front features a back-lit 4-line LCD display and a membrane keyboard for parameterization and manual operation. At the rear are the plug-in contacts for the power supply, for communication and for connecting the current and voltage measuring transducers of the series circuits. The measuring system can be fitted with any number of measuring modules up to 8, with up to eight circuits connected to each measuring module.

The measured values acquired are made available to the higher-order instrumentation and control system via a field bus. The field buses currently available solely for redundant and non-redundant communication are CAN-BUS and PROFIBUS-DP, while for the non-redundant category the serial protocols RCOM and MODBUS are additionally possible via the system’s own RS485 interface.

The data thus conditioned are shown on the display with a cycle time of approx. 320 ms, together with the name of the circuit concerned, and forwarded to the instrumentation and control system. There is also a provision for the manual selection of individual circuits for display.

IME Insulation Resistance Measuring System

The IME, a constituent part of the COSAL system, is a measuring system for acquiring, displaying and forwarding insulation measured values in phase-controlled series circuits of airport lighting systems.

The measuring system consists of a 19” drawer, which at the front incorporates a backlit, 4-line LC display plus a membrane keyboard for parameterization and manual operator control. At the rear are the plug-in contacts for the power supply, communication and controlling the high-voltage relay provided for each series circuit. The measuring system is able to cyclically monitor up to 64 circuits in succession. The measured values acquired are made available for the higher-order instrumentation and control system via a field bus.

The field buses currently available for redundant and non-redundant communication are CAN-BUS and PROFIBUS-DP, while for the non-redundant category the serial protocols RCOM and MODBUS are additionally possible via the system’s own RS485 interface.

When using regulators from the COSAL family (CCREs), the insulation value measured can also be shown directly in the display of the regulator concerned. The measuring voltage is also automatically disconnected from the circuit when the regulator is switched off.

LMS 100 Loop Measurement System

The LMS 100 (Loop Measurement System) – a part of the COSAL system – offers an option for monitoring the traffic at stop bars, for example, or on taxiway sections at airfields by means of loops laid in the ground. Thanks to the loops’ dimensions and their sensitivity, the system is optimally fit-for-purpose in detecting aircraft and ground vehicles. Note that the evaluation unit can also be installed a long way away from the loops. The system is self-adaptive, which means no parameterization routines are required.

The LMS 100 consists essentially of the evaluation unit (BSM) and the connection unit (AFE). It is able to monitor up to 4 loops. While the evaluation unit is mounted on a top-hat rail in the AGL substation, the connection unit is located near the loop’s position, e.g. in a fire pot. The evaluation and connection units are linked to each other using an A-2YF(L)2Y 2x2x0.8 shielded telecommunication outdoor cable, which can be up to 2.5 km long. An additional external overvoltage protection (OVP) feature is installed near the evaluation unit.

One or more evaluation units can be supplied via a shared or (in the case of redundant supply) via two external power supply units (PSs). The evaluation units report the loop data to the higher-order instrumentation and control system via parallel outputs or optionally via one or two Ethernet interfaces. Any desired number of evaluation units can be accommodated in a substation.
